How Personal Injury Attorneys Benefit Society
The verdict is in: Lawyers aren't so bad. Jokes aside, personal injury attorneys have an important role in today’s society. In this essay I will highlight some of the reasons why personal injury attorneys are valuable to society, but first; what is a personal injury attorney? A personal injury attorney is someone who provides legal services to those who have been claimed to be injured, whether physically or psychologically, as the result of another person's behavior, a company, or government agency. So in other words, a personal injury attorney is someone who can represent you in court when you’ve been hurt or injured.
But why are they useful? Well for one, they deter bad behavior. Personal injury attorneys specialize in an area of law known as tort law. The main goal being to compensate injured victims. But tort law also has a second goal; to deter bad and dangerous behavior by individuals and businesses. For example, in 1930, companies were aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure. But tort law wasn’t recognized in most states back then and the laws were such that companies had no fear of being sued by employees when they experience symptomes days (or even decades) down the road. In the 1960’s, things changed. The tort law became widely recognized and courts began interpreting the statute of limitations to allow employees sue their companies when they discovered they had symptoms of asbestos. In this example, the personal injury lawyers involved in those cases not only compensated their clients, they also made it so that countless others would not be exposed to asbestos.
Personal injury lawyers also provide peace of mind. We all know that life is full of risks; just driving down the road or visiting a loved one is inherently risky. However, because personal injury lawyers exist, these activities can be done. Knowing that if the worst does happen, there is a legal remedy. If the worst does happen, a personal injury attorney allows you to focus on your recovery while they do all the “heavy lifting.”
Another big reason why personal injury attorneys are so valuable to society is because they do “Pro bono work.” The term “pro bono” comes from Latin pro bono public; which means “for the public good.” So when someone says lawyers provide pro bono services they mean they provide legal services without pay. This allows individuals who wouldn’t have the money to seek a legal remedy to do so.
There are many more benefits of personal injury attorneys. They force insurance companies to compensate the injured fairly, they force property owners to be held accountable, they force employers to create safe working conditions, they force landlords to provide safe living conditions, they even force dog owners to prevent their dogs from biting humans!
In summary, Personal Injury Attorneys do a lot in the shadows. They make sure we are safe wherever we go and that the rules are followed to the letter. So the next time you see a personal injury lawyer (or any kind of lawyer for that matter) I suggest you give them a big thanks!
