Tips and Tricks to avoid Distracted Driving
What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is any visual or auditory activity that could divert a person's attention away from the practice of driving. All distractions on the wheel can endanger both the driver, passenger, and pedestrian safety. Examples of distracted driving include the following:
1. Texting (like in the video above)
2. Using a cell phone or smartphone
3. Eating and drinking
4. Talking to passengers
5. Grooming
6. Reading
7. Watching a video
8. Smoking
There are three types of distraction; visual, manual, and cognitive. Human brains are unable to perform two cognitively complex tasks at the same time. In other words, no matter how you try and defend yourself, YOU CAN'T MULTITASK! Drivers using cell phones are four times as likely to be in a crash. About 1 in 4 car crashed involves a cell phone.
National Safety Council estimates that 26% of crashes involves hand-held and hands-free cell phones. But remember, HANDS FREE DOES NOT MEAN RISK FREE! Sending text messages or emails while driving draws the drivers attention away from the road. Tied together with the time actually spent on the road, meaning a greater risk of car accidents and injuries caused by a variety of factors including:
1. Bad weather
2. Road debris
3. Impaired drivers
4. Sleepiness
Distracted driving, especially in teens, causes a lot of accidents and fatalities everyday. So, here's a list of tips you can use to avoid being distracted on the road, and being safe in general.
1. PAY ATTENTION!
Probably the most important ( or one of the most important) Please pay attention to the road in front of you while on the wheel. (I think the rule is at least 200 feet) and use your breaks responsible so you an slow down as needed.
2. OBEY ALL TRAFFIC RULES!
There's a reason you have to take a written and on-the-road driving test. From right of way to stop signs and traffic lights, there are many rules drivers must understand and obey.
3. AVOID DISTRACTIONS!
Just like the woman in the video, I wish phones could automatically shutdown as soon as you enter a car. But since they can't, try your best to avoid using your phone, talking to a passenger, eating, or doing anything else that could take your mind of the road. If possible, you could have a passenger manage your phone for you.
4. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!
I'm sure everyone knows thus even from birth. Riding in a car without a seat belt on is dangerous in a number of ways. If the car was to come to a sudden stop, not having a seatbelt on could mean you flying forward!
5. DON'T DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE!
Pretty self explanatory. Don't drive drunk. It's important to be aware of your surroundings when driving.
6. PREPARE BEFORE YOU GET ON THE ROAD!
Emphasis on the before part. Check your mirrors, adjust your seat, do whatever it is you have to do before driving off
7. WATCH THE WEATHER!
It's also important to not the weather before you go, and even when your driving. Especially if it's rainy, or snowy. Make sure you follow all safety rules to the letter.
8. PULL OVER AND PARK IN A SAFE LOCATION IF A CALL OR TEXT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!!
I get it, things happen. If you absolutely have to call or text someone, make sure you pull over to a safe spot first!
