Advice from a Military Brat

Image
The picture above means way more to some people then what most might perceive. To anyone in the armed forces, it may mean they have a duty to serve, protect, and fight for the people of the United States of America. And it comes with a value that's much bigger than the individual. Yes it's true, members of the armed forces make a lot of sacrifices everyday to ensure the safety and prosperity of the American people. But let's not forget what's backing them up, family. Military families offer just as much sacrifice as the soldiers do (probably even more, but you didn't hear that from me.) I myself am the daughter of an Army Officer, so I know what it means to make sacrifices. I think one of the biggest (and most stressful) things military children pass through is having to be the new kid, and adapting to new environments and communities. But I'm here to tell you it's not as bad as it seems. Okay, maybe it is a bit challenging; and I'll use myself as an exa...

Ride Your Bike To Work! (Or not)

Image
To be healthy and look fit, you need to be physically active. Physical activity on a regular basis can help protect you from diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Most people choose to ride their bike to work, school, or just for pure leisure. But, even though riding your bike has it's advantages, it also comes with some dangerous disadvantages. So today, let's look at the pros and cons of riding your bike to work everyday.  PRO'S 1. Cycling is low impact.  Meaning that it causes less injuries than other forms of exercise. 2. It's Easy.  Unlike other sports, it doesn't require high levels of physical skill (Obviously! Even a three year old can ride a bike.) 3. It's a fun way to get fit.  Cycling can be done anywhere. Along a beach, through the woods, or in a big city. The sites and scenery ca make your ride enjoyable. Not to mention you could ride with family members or friends. 4. It comes with a lot of health benefits.  As I stated ear...

Tips and Tricks to avoid Distracted Driving

Image
What is Distracted Driving? Distracted driving is any visual or auditory activity that could divert a person's attention away from the practice of driving. All distractions on the wheel can endanger both the driver, passenger, and pedestrian safety. Examples of distracted driving include the following:  1. Texting (like in the video above) 2. Using a cell phone or smartphone 3. Eating and drinking 4. Talking to passengers 5. Grooming 6. Reading 7. Watching a video 8. Smoking There are three types of distraction; visual, manual, and cognitive. Human brains are unable to perform two cognitively complex tasks at the same time. In other words, no matter how you try and defend yourself, YOU CAN'T MULTITASK! Drivers using cell phones are four times as likely to be in a crash. About 1 in 4 car crashed involves a cell phone. National Safety Council estimates that 26% of crashes involves hand-held and hands-free cell phones. But remember, HANDS FREE DOES NOT MEAN RISK FREE! Sending text...

Driverless Cars!

Image
Driverless vehicles are becoming more of a reality. Who should bear the responsibility for damages caused by a crash involving driverless cars? Driverless vehicles are cars or trucks in which human drivers are never required to take control to safely operate the vehicle. They combine sensors and software to control, navigate, and drive the vehicle. Various self driving technologies have been developed by Google, Uber, Tesla, Nissan, and other major automakers and technology companies. While design details vary, most driverless cars create and maintain a virtual map of their surroundings. Software then processes those inputs, plots a path, and sends the instructions to the vehicles “actuators,” which control acceleration, braking, and steering.  The costs and benefits of self-driving cars are still hypothetical. We still need more information as to how they will impact drivers, the economy, and environmental and public health. However, safety is a major concern. Thousands of people ...

How Personal Injury Attorneys Benefit Society

Image
The verdict is in: Lawyers aren't so bad. Jokes aside, personal injury attorneys have an important role in today’s society. In this essay I will highlight some of the reasons why personal injury attorneys are valuable to society, but first; what is a personal injury attorney? A personal injury attorney is someone who  provides legal services to those who have been claimed to be injured, whether physically or psychologically, as the result of another person's behavior, a company, or government agency. So in other words, a personal injury attorney is someone who can represent you in court when you’ve been hurt or injured. But why are they useful? Well for one, they deter bad behavior. Personal injury attorneys specialize in an area of law known as tort law. The main goal being to compensate injured victims. But tort law also has a second goal; to deter bad and dangerous behavior by individuals and businesses. For example, in 1930, companies were aware of the dangers of asbestos e...

Need to Know: Workers Compensation

Image
Many of us go to jobs that may require a lot of heavy lifting, dangerous equipment, or moving around. In these types of jobs safety measures are put in place so workers don’t get hurt or injured. But sometimes, the opposite happens. Even with all the safety procedures, workers can still get hurt. Luckily, there's a way they are compensated for their trouble and “rewarded” for their hard work.  If you’ve ever been hurt or injured on the job, you're entitled to a workers compensation. Workers compensation, or workers comp, is an insurance providing wage replacement and medical attention to workers injured in the course of employment. Getting injured during work can become a burden, both financially and medically. Medical bills can pile up and there might not be enough money to pay them all, because you (the worker) wouldn’t be receiving a paycheck for work. Which can also leave unpaid bills. It’s important that you minimize the stress by inquiring about workers compensation. They...

My Guide For Health Workers

Image
In my lifetime, I’ve worked in two separate job organizations geared towards the health and well being of elderly people. In other words, I was a caretaker. My major responsibilities were cleaning, cooking, and making sure the clients were comfortable and happy with their environment. I enjoyed talking with them and listening to stories they had to share. But inasmuch as I so enjoyed the jobs, there are many health risks associated with working with elderly people. One of the major health risks of the job is that it can sometimes be stressful. Many caretakers are providing services almost all day and even into the night. Meaning there is little time for work, friends, or other  family members. During my first year as a caregiver, I took care of my grandmother. For me, it wasn’t actually as stressful as most make it seem because I was around family 24/7; tied with the fact that I only worked on weekends and specific weekdays so I still went to school and made friends. But for people...

Policy Change

Image
If I had the power to change or create a policy geared towards general health in my country, I would make some kind of law that states that more money, and respect, should go towards all healthcare workers. And I don’t just mean Doctors and Nurses, I’m also talking about housekeepers, nurses aids, and many other overworks, yet underpaid healthcare workers. Don’t get me wrong, doctors and nurses are like superheroes (especially during nation and worldwide pandemics such as Covid19) but we must also remember that superheroes have sidekicks; who are just as important in the success of the mision. Doctors and nurses aren’t the only healthcare workers risking their lives to save others, we also have people like nurse aids and housekeepers who keep homes clean and take care of the elderly, who are more susceptible to many viruses and diseases.  “Too often, we overlook the heroism and dignity of millions of low paid, undervalued, and essential health workers.” Says Molly Kinder of the Met...

Racial Disparity

Image
One in ten black men in his thirties is in prison or jail on every given day. American Indian youth are three times as likely as white youth to be held in a juvenile detention facility. Hispanic men are 2.3 times as likely as white men to be incarcerated. Racial inequality in the United States identifies the social advantages and disparities that affect different races within the United States. These can also be seen as a result of historic oppression, inequality of inheritance, or overall prejudice, especially against minority groups.   Racial disparity is defined as common” in the criminal justice system. Where the proportion of racial/ethnic groups within the control of the system is greater than that of the general population. Look at the numbers for more proof. With almost 700 people in prison for every 100,000 residents, the US has the highest rate of incarcerated people in the world. Close to 3% of the American population, in fact, is now in prison.  T...
